Kurosawa’s only film without Japanese dialogue, shot in the East Siberian taiga. Indigenous guide Dersu Uzala repeatedly saves the life of the Russian explorer Captain Arsenyev. With imposing footage of nature, shot by a director grappling with himself.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, a Russian explorer sets off on an expedition to a region of Siberia that hasn’t yet been mapped. Indigeous hunter Dersu Uzala joins his entourage and is soon indispensable thanks to his knowledge of local nature. He even saves the life of the learned explorer, Captain Arsenyev, sparking a close friendship between them.
