Drifters
John Grierson / GB, 1929 / 40 min.
Drifters sketches the harsh lives of Scottish herring fishers through expressive camerawork. Director John Grierson is the founding father of the realistic British Documentary Film Movement; screens as a counterpart to Leviathan by artists Paravel & Castaing-Taylor. Live accompaniment by Martin de Ruiter.

Black-and-white footage of gnarled fishermen in the harbour of Scottish fishing village Hannan Voe. The men board the fishing vessels and leave the harbour; a ship bobs on the rough waves of the North Sea, in search of a good catch of herring. A storm gets up and the nets are brought in; upon their return, the herring are unloaded and dispatched to the shops by train and boat.
