Aki Kaurismäki / FI, DE, 2023 / 81 min.
Finally, after six years, a real Kaurismäki in cinemas: Fallen Leaves sketches the burgeoning love between two have nots in an alcohol soaked Helsinki, where love wins, against all the odds. In the background someone is sings Schubert’s ‘Serenade’ in the karaoke.
Potential happiness threatens to be lost in this archetypal Kaurismäki storyline. Ansa and Holappa, two lost souls in Helsinki, both recently sacked, have their first date at the cinema. Ansa writes her phone number down for Holappa on a scrap of paper, which he subsequently loses. Will Holappa and Ansa ever meet again? Luckily, Ansa re-appears at the cinema.
Before Fallen Leaves you will see the Ultrakort animated film Penumbra by Rianne Stremmelaar. A little girl walks in the forest and picks mushrooms. A crow with an empty nest watches her menacingly. What happens in this stylish animation when their paths cross?
