Falling Leaves (Giorgobistve)

Otar Iosseliani / SUHH, 1966 / 95 min.

Falling Leaves chronicles the experiences of the young wine engineer Niko as he tries to counter illegal practices in a wine collective. A satirical portrait of labour relations in the Soviet Union, mixed with near-documentary footage of daily life in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi.

Falling Leaves, the feature debut by Georgian filmmaker Otar Iosseliani (1934-2023), was selected for the Cannes film festival in 1968, where it promptly won the FIPRESCI prize. After his film Pastorale was shelved by the Soviet authorities in 1976, he emigrated in 1984 to France, where he continued to live and work. Eye has various films by Iosseliani in its collection, including a rare copy of Falling Leaves: a satirical portrait of young oenologist Niko, who decides to combat illegal practices within a wine-growing cooperative.
