Ik ben twintig
Marlen Khutsiyev / SUHH, 1962 / 170 min.
This coming-of-age drama by Marlen Khutsiev from the early 1960s, the ‘Thaw’ era, is a portrait of three young men aimlessly roaming around Moscow, without any glorious Communist ideals. Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev saw a preview of the film and was not amused.

With the war in Ukraine and harsh repression meted out by Putin, Russia seems to be returning to the dictatorial era of Stalin, with a contemporary twist. Unlike in the late 1950s and early ’60s, when Nikita Khrushchev created space for political reforms, and the cultural climate became (relatively) more liberal.
