Fårö-Dokument 1970

Ingmar Bergman discovered the grim, windswept island of Fårö in 1960, whilst scouting for locations for Through a Glass Darkly. Almost a decade later, the director wished to create an homage to the island’s inhabitants. In Fårö-Dokument, shot using a handheld 16mm camera by Sven Nykvist, Bergman interviews all sorts of locals whilst exposing the generation gap between the young inhabitants desperate to leave and the older islanders who are steeped in island traditions. The film reveals that Bergman was also a sensitive, masterful documentarian.
