Filmacademie: Shadowplay

Filmacademie: Shadowplay

With Shadowplay the Filmacademie invites you to notice the quiet resistances that can so easily go unnoticed, yet come to shape our lives. By attending to what flickers at the edges, the program opens a way of reading the world through the shadows it casts.

Shadowplay takes its cue from Bresson’s reminder to make visible what, without you, would remain unseen. The program gathers films that examine routines and inherited structures which quietly determine the rhythm of life. We get to know invisible power structures from the shadows they cast, their impact on our daily lives, on the smaller things.

Memory, tradition, and the quotidian violence of inherited hierarchies all cast shadows. These systems continue to operate even when left unspoken. The films trace how memory settles in gestures and spaces, how stories bend under pressure, and how individuals learn to negotiate the weight of what has been handed down to them. Through film, we study these shadows to understand the forces that shape us.
