Businessman Fitzcarraldo wants to build an opera house in the Peruvian rainforest. To reach his plot, he has a steamboat dragged across the hills. This hazardous feat was performed in real life, lead Klaus Kinski drove everyone insane.

In early 20th-century Peru, Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald, known as ‘Fitzcarraldo’, a huge opera fan, particularly of world-famous tenor Enrico Caruso wants to build an opera house for the latter in the middle of the rainforest. To acquire the necessary funds he buys a rubber plantation plot and boards a steamboat to the jungle.
