Glocken aus der Tiefe – Glaube und Aberglaube in Rußland
Werner Herzog / DEUZE, 1993 / 60 min.
With its shamen, faith-healers, exorcists and a pious/credulous population, the Siberia portrayed in this documentary is far removed from the modern, western world – not only in a geographical sense. Herzog adds his own little exaggerations here and there.
Shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Herzog turned his gaze to centuries-old religious and mystic rituals that had managed to survive in Siberia. In an objective, observational style, he records the devotion and folly he comes across – from pilgrims who cross a frozen lake on their bellies to catch a glimpse of a sunken city beneath to the reincarnation of Jesus Christ himself.
