Hello, It's Me
Frunze Dovlatyan / SUHH, 1966 / 137 min.
This classic by Armenian filmmaker Frunze Dovlatyan from the period of the Soviet ‘Thaw’ has been acclaimed as a surprising story of lost loves, filmed in stunning wide-screen format; it screened in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 1966.

With the war in Ukraine and harsh repression meted out by Putin, Russia seems to be returning to the dictatorial era of Stalin, with a contemporary twist. Unlike in the late 1950s and early ’60s, when Nikita Khrushchev created space for political reforms, and the cultural climate became (relatively) more liberal.
