To Love
Mikhail Kalik / SUHH, 1968 / 75 min.
Michail Kalik is seen as one of the most talented directors from the Khruschev ‘Thaw’ period. To Love... is an ode to love, based on four short stories by modern Russian writers, interspersed with documentary footage of Soviet citizens talking candidly about matters of the heart.

With the war in Ukraine and harsh repression meted out by Putin, Russia seems to be returning to the dictatorial era of Stalin, with a contemporary twist. Unlike in the late 1950s and early ’60s, when Nikita Khrushchev created space for political reforms, and the cultural climate became (relatively) more liberal.
