Erland Josephson, the famous Bergman actor, plays the successful dramaturge Aleksandr, who is celebrating his birthday at a country cottage surrounded by friends. In the meantime, the bomb has dropped and the Third World War is imminent. Aleksandr seems to be the only one conscious of the full extent of the disaster and he decides to sacrifice his belongings in the hope god will intervene.
