Het offer (The Sacrifice)
Andrej Tarkovski / SE, FR, GB, 1986 / 149 min.
Tarkovsky’s last film won three awards at Cannes. Shot in Sweden, the film revolves around Alexander, a former actor and philosopher who turns to God, vouching to give up everything he loves in an attempt to prevent a nuclear war. New 4K restoration.

Erland Josephson, the famous Bergman actor, plays the successful dramaturge Aleksandr, who is celebrating his birthday at a country cottage surrounded by friends. In the meantime, the bomb has dropped and the Third World War is imminent. Aleksandr seems to be the only one conscious of the full extent of the disaster and he decides to sacrifice his belongings in the hope god will intervene. Every now and again, the postman drops by eagerly and easily quoting Nietzsche.
