Het ondergronds orkest
Heddy Honigmann / NL, 1997 / 112 min.
In this moving classic documentary, Heddy Honigmann follows a number of Parisian buskers. They are foreign musicians, often refugees, who clandestinely earn their money in the Paris metro. Brand new restoration.

Honigmann shows the musicians at work, but also follows them to their homes in aboveground Paris. The international group that has its roots in North Africa, Eastern Europe and South America, talks about their music, political and societal problems, their dreams and their search for a better life. A number of them play in a real orchestra that performs at the Place des Vosges.
Curator Lou Burkart introduces the premiere of the digital restoration.
The restoration of The Underground Orchestra has been made possible thanks to A Season of Classic Films, an initiative of Association des Cinémathèques Européennes (ACE) supported by the EU Creative Europe MEDIA programme. A Season of Classic Films brings European films closer to audiences through a programme of free film screenings, provided by national and regional film archives, throughout Europe.
Preliminary film
Before the screening of The Underground Orchestra, you'll see Blindelings (2'), a short animated film by Joanne van der Weg from 2014. What do you hear when you can't see and are doing something as mundane as taking a train to Rotterdam Central Station? The clicking of a white cane on the pavement, the barking of a scary dog, and the familiar sounds of stations and trains are vividly brought to the viewer.
In Eye and in national cinemas.
