Il mulino del Po
Alberto Lattuada / IT, 1948 / 97 min.
Neo-realist masterpiece by Alberto Lattuada, co-written by Fellini, tells the story of the rise of socialism in the Po valley, interspersed with a dramatic love story. The shots of life on the farms and around the River Po are a masterclass in cinematography.

Farming life in the vicinity of Ferrara, a small town in the fertile Po valley, circa 1890. Miller’s daughter Berta is head-over-heels in love with farmer’s son Orbino, and both are caught up in tumultuous times: the miller rises up against exploitative landowners, but Orbino does not take his father’s side. Love clashes with social realities.
