Intolerable Cruelty

Ethan Coen, Joel Coen / US, 2003 / 99 min.

The Coen Brothers’ first mainstream romantic comedy was a hit thanks to George Clooney as a wily divorce lawyer and Catherine Zeta-Jones as a serpent-like gold digger as well as the witty, hilarious dialogues.

poster Intolerable Cruelty (Joel & Ethan Coen, US 2003)
Suave divorce lawyer Miles Massey (George Clooney as a Cary Grant lookalike) suffers from ennui. He hits the tennis balls back from the service machine without moving his racket, complains vociferously about the uselessness of his silver fruit spoons and has nightmares about the number of lunches he has listed as expenses. He gets a new lease of life when gold digger Marylin Rexroth (Catherine Zeta-Jones) enters his life and they become embroiled in a completely amoral struggle about the division of goods, which Massey wrote the reference book on. Marylin needs to be really clever to get the edge on him.
