Christmas in July
Preston Sturges / US, 1940 / 67 min.
People convince office clerk Jimmy that he has won 25,000 dollar in a competition. Guilelessly he becomes a big spender. Preston Sturges’ hilarious, razor sharp satire on the American obsession with success.
$ 25,000 can be won by the winning advertising slogan for a coffee brand. Ambitious office clerk Jimmy comes up with one: “If you can’t sleep, it isn’t the coffee, it’s the bunk”. His colleagues convince him his dopey catchphrase has won. Jimmy basks in his success, showering his fiancée, friends, acquaintances and family with gifts like Santa.
