Raising Arizona
Joel Coen / US, 1987 / 94 min.
According to many, the best comedy ever made about a couple (Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter) who can’t have children and kidnap a baby only to be hunted down by escaped prisoners, a furniture store magnate and 'The Lone Biker of the Apocalypse'.

After their grim debut Blood Simple, the Coen Brothers surprised everyone with this anarchic, goofy, neo-noir comedy. The Nicolas Cage/Coen Brothers combination proved a match made in heaven that also helped Cage strike gold: his ‘Hi’ McDunnough would be the first of many roles in which he played an ex-con. Cage, complete with spiky hair and a Road Runner/Woody Woodpecker tattoo wants to start a family with the straight-laced ex-prison guard ‘Ed’ McDunnough (Holly Hunter) but they remain childless. Out of pure desperation, they steal one of furniture magnate Nathan Arizona’s five overprivileged children – one less won’t matter now, will it?
