Iron Island
Mohammad Rasoulof / IR, 2005 / 90 min.
Poignant, ironic parable on oppression from Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof, whose latest film The Seed of the Sacred Fig screens in March. Homeless Arab Sunni Muslims – a minority in Iran – squat a deserted oil tanker. Which is slowly sinking.

The heavily rusted tanker in the Persian Gulf is commanded by Captain Nemat, who rules his mini-society of the homeless with an iron hand. His command extends not only to the tanker itself; he also arranges marriages, all economic transactions and even visits to the mosque. To keep the community going, Nemat sells off the last remnants of oil in the tanker, and pieces of salvaged steel.
