The nightlife, the theatres, the cafés, the neon advertisements, the showbiz glamour… there’s nothing Essie finds more attractive. So she's delighted when she manages to get a job as an usherette in a small, run-down theatre. She then falls in love with the unreliable Joe. Essie’s sick mother really wants to meet her daughter’s finance, but he never appears – so a stranger takes his place.
