La ciénaga
Lucrecia Martel / AR, JP, ES, FR, 2001 / 103 min.
This cinematic marvel by Lucrecia Martel chronicles the disintegration of a wealthy family: red wine binges, murky swimming pools, spectral grandmothers, girl crushes and mad dogs. An ominous, sweltering debut that creeps deep under the skin. Chosen by Janis Rafa.

Eye has dedicated an exhibition to the work of Janis Rafa which centres on the relationship between humanity and animals. She had the following to say about her selection: "I watched this film when I was working on my feature film Kala azar. It inspired me because it composes a very complex, personal and raw visual world. I find it interesting how it is done cinematographically: it is a messy world, the camera focuses a lot on structures. But I was especially inspired by the non-linear way of composing a feature film: it does have a story, but it is mainly about creating a world."
For Martel, a decadent family in the small provincial town of Salta, Argentina, provides the perfect vehicle for a sultry film on class distinctions, nature, sexuality, political unrest and social stagnation.

Eye Filmmuseum presents a solo exhibition by artist and filmmaker Janis Rafa. Spoken language rarely features in her evocative films and video installations; she focuses instead on the silent presence of non-humans, allowing them to become the leading force within her poetic compositions. Her narratives emphasise animalistic instincts, untamed behaviours and inabilities to coexist, alongside human fears, expectations and failure.
