Les enfants du paradis

Marcel Carné / FR, 1945 / 190 min.

This flamboyant, tragic romance set in the world of the Parisian theatre around 1830 tells the love story of courtesan Claire (Arletty) and four different men. A classic on the capricious nature of love, now celebrating 80 years of glowing reviews.

Marcel Carné has created a lively portrait of the colourful theatrical milieu: his famous tale of love, filmed during the Nazi occupation, is populated by performers, petty criminals, murderers, prostitutes and sleazy impresarios. A number of his actors were wanted by the Gestapo for their resistance activities – lead actor Barrault even hid members of the resistance on set. Thanks to its fascinating genesis, this film is both an allegory for resistance and a poetic-realistic ode to the world of the theatre. The screenplay was written by the poet Jacques Prévert.

This 2K restored version is provided by Pathé France.
