Les Pires
Lise Akoka, Romane Gueret / FR, 2022 / 99 min.
This film-in-a-film follows a director making a drama about kids with problems. This moving debut brings us closer to the kids’ perspective on things as well as questioning filmmaking’s ethics.
Flemish director Gabriel (Johan Heldenbergh) is 54 and this will be his first film, a raw portrait of problem kids, with the evocative title Pissing in the North Wind. He holds a casting in Cité Pablo Picasso, a housing project in the suburbs of the French town of Boulogne-Sur-Mer. A revealing scene involves Gabriel explaining to a future young actor that he is looking for kids who haven’t had easy lives. The latter responds: "Sounds like you are looking for the worst".
Pre-screening
Before The Worst Ones (Les pires), you will see the short film Bout de Zan en de krokodil (5') by Louis Feuillade from 1913. He does this by scaring him with the help of his dog dressed as a crocodile. Silent film with music from the Eye archive.

Screened at prominent national and international festivals, yet never released in Dutch cinemas. Quite unjustly so, Eye Filmmuseum thinks, and so it has once again brought an exceptional selection of films from international festivals to the Netherlands.
