Lifeboat
Alfred Hitchcock / US, 1944 / 97 min.
Each month up to the summer, a newly restored classic from ‘the master of suspense’. In June: Lifeboat, Hitchcock’s contribution to the Allied war effort, intended to raise Americans’ awareness of the dangers posed by German U-boats off the US coast.

Following an attack on an American cruise ship by a German submarine, a handful of survivors seek safety in a lifeboat. The captain of the U-boat that torpedoed the ship – the submarine was destroyed too – is also on the lifeboat. A bitter struggle on the tiny boat ensues: there’s very little food and water on board, and class distinctions between the survivors of the shipwreck flare up dramatically.
