M - eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder
Fritz Lang / DEUZE, 1931 / 110 min.
Fritz Lang’s classic about fictitious child murderer Hans Beckert is still seen as an absolute high point in German pre-war cinema. Hounded, Beckert scurries through the mist-shrouded streets of an anonymous big city – the Grossstadt – by night. Screening again in Eye, on 35mm celluloid.

Hans Beckert is a serial murderer of children, and is on the run. Roaming a sinister urban landscape, he manages to stay one step ahead of the law – until an alliance of professional criminals whose ‘business’ is being hampered by the police hunting Beckert capture him and bring him before a ‘people’s court’.
Screening of a restored celluloid copy. The restoration was initiated and coordinated by the Filmmuseum and carried out in 2001, in cooperation with Deutsche Kinemathek.
