On a String

Isabel Hagen / US, 2025 / 78 min.

You’re a classically trained musician picking up freelance gigs here and there. What to do when your toxic ex-boyfriend creates an opening for you with the New York Philharmonic? In her feature debut, Isabel Hagen portrays the life of her Gen Z-alter ego ‘Isabel’ with a huge dose of humour.

Isabel (Isabel Hagen) graduated successfully as a violinist from the renowned Juilliard School. She’s struggling to make ends meet with bits and pieces of gigs at weddings and parties, but this isn’t easy in a city where the competition is absolutely cutthroat.

Pre-film

Before On a String, you will see the short film Fallin' Floyd (8') by Albert 't Hooft and Paco Vink. This 2013 animated film is about the jazz musician Floyd, who is dumped by his girlfriend just after he has bought her an engagement ring. The cheerful trumpeter did not see this setback coming and falls into a deep depression. This manifests itself as a pitch-black little devil that drives the musician to the bottle.

In Eye and in national cinemas.

Screened at prominent national and international festivals, yet never released in Dutch cinemas. Quite unjustly so, Eye Filmmuseum thinks, and so it has once again brought an exceptional selection of films from international festivals to the Netherlands.
