Paisà

Roberto Rossellini / IT, 1946 / 117 min.

Six stories about the Allies in Italy, from the landings in Sicily up to the day before victory. Roberto Rosselllini's film is still seen as one of the most incisive observations of the effects of war on ordinary people – both civilians and soldiers.

Roberto Rossellini shows a ruined Italy, the inhabitants of which remain resilient in spite of everything; one reason why Paisà is often cited as the model for later war films in which the makers went in search of the unembellished truth and stories of human survival, in the hope of activating social consciousness in their audiences.
