Pather Panchali
Satyajit Ray / IN, 1955 / 125 min.
Charles Burnett, pioneer of Black independent cinema, whose films are currently screening in Eye, said that Satyajit Ray’s award-winning film Pather Panchali was the most significant influence on his debut Killer of Sheep, which also deals with a family’s everyday lives and concerns.

The heyday of Italian neorealism was pretty much over when director Satyajit Ray made Pather Panchali – the major Indian representative of the genre. The film is the first in his ‘Apu trilogy’, examining the everyday lives of people on the bottom rung of Indian society on the basis of three phases in the life of the eponymous character.
Screens in a 4K restored version from the Eye collection.
