Paths of Glory
Stanley Kubrick / US, 1957 / 86 min.
Stanley Kubrick’s international breakthrough is still considered one of the most impressive anti-war films ever made. In this World War I drama, Kirk Douglas plays the principled colonel Dax who stands up for three soldiers who have been court-martialed.

In the mid-1950s, legendary actor Kirk Douglas founded his own production company, Bryna Productions, which he used to launch careers, including that of Stanley Kubrick (“a talented shit”, according to Douglas). In the former’s powerful World War I drama Paths of Glory (1957) Douglas plays Colonel Dax, who stands up for three soldiers who have been scapegoated and court-martialed. Kirk Douglas was of the opinion that “I’ve made a career of playing sons of bitches”.
