Pixote
Hector Babenco / BR, 1980 / 128 min.
The subtitle of Pixote, ‘the law of the weakest’ (a lei do mais fraco), is revealing. The eleven-year-old boy Pixote and his friends are like hunted animals who can only survive through crime in a world without mercy.

Between 1964 and 1985, Brazil suffered under a merciless dictatorship. During this period, Argentine-born director Hector Babenco shocked the world with his portrait of a young generation who knew nothing other than violence, and who were at the same time perpetrator and victim.
Restored by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project and Cineteca di Bologna at L'Immagine Ritrovata in association with HB Filmes, Cinemateca Brasileira, and JLS Facilitações Sonoras. Restoration funded by the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation.
