Playtime

Jacques Tati / FR, 1967 / 124 min.

Jacques Tati’s magnum opus. Monsieur Hulot is caught in a bleak and soul-destroying Paris filled with lifeless steel and glass architecture, an increasingly dehumanised world. Tati shot the film in a specially constructed film set, ‘Tativille’. New 4K restoration.

poster Playtime (Jacques Tati, FR 1967) (4K re-release)
To capture the impersonal nature of modern cities, Tati filmed mainly in total shots, in which the characters seem to drown. InPlaytime, he sketches a world obsessed with money, excessive luxury, strange technology and frigid architecture. In this world there are no more individuals, just masses: everyone is preoccupied with themselves, and with working.
