Quei loro incontri
Danièle Huillet, Jean-Marie Straub / IT, FR, 2006 / 68 min.
Calm, impressive declamation of five texts from Cesare Pavese’s Dialoghi con Leucò by non-professional actors, sitting in nature, recorded with precision by leading figures within European art film Danièle Huillet & Jean-Marie Straub. Chosen by Albert Serra.

You could easily say that this is the kind of film you would not expect to be made in the 21st century. Nevertheless, in 2006 filmmaking duo Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet made the extremely artistic Quei loro incontri (‘The Meetings of Them’), designed completely in accordance with the makers’ insights.
Quei loro incontri is tightly edited serious narrative in which the spoken word, nature footage and the accompanying sounds constitute an almost mystical, enchanting whole.
Albert Serra, the subject of the current exhibition at Eye, selected this film.

Eye Filmmuseum presents the first exhibition in the Netherlands about the work of Catalan film and theatre director Albert Serra. Transforming the entire exhibition space into an immersive stage, Serra orchestrates nocturnal and clandestine encounters where theatre, cinema, and art converge.

Why in Eye
Straub & Huillet’s influence on Albert Serra’s early films in particular can be seen in the use of classic texts and non-professional actors to blur the boundary between actors as people and the role being played.
