Lynne Ramsay / GB, FR, 1999 / 94 min.
Glasgow, in the mid-seventies: James is growing up in a poor neighbourhood, in tough conditions, but doesn’t let this get him down. Feature debut in documentary style by female director Lynne Ramsay, who was born in Glasgow.
Ratcatcher is a sketch of the life of Scottish pre-teen James, during the garbage men’s strike in Glasgow, in the summer of 1973. He lives in a neighbourhood that might be called disadvantaged, a bad neighbourhood, a Gorbals, or special needs area.
