Red Road
Andrea Arnold / GB, DK, 2006 / 113 min.
In Andrea Arnold’s much lauded debut (Grand Jury Prize at Cannes) security guard Jackie starts stalking a man and the reason for her obsession is slowly revealed. Arnold subtly plays with viewers’ expectations. Gritty, realistic psychological thriller with an excellent cast.

Jackie (Kate Dickie) works in security watching CCTV. Day and night she watches footage from homes in dodgy Glasgow neighbourhoods. She gains perverse enjoyment from watching other people’s lives. Until, that is, one day, someone from her past appears on screen – someone she hoped to never lay eyes on again. Now she can no longer outrun the man or her own demons.

Britain’s Brightest
Idiosyncratic British filmmakers Andrea Arnold (1961) and Lynne Ramsay (1969) make films like their lives depend on it. Perhaps not in terms of quantity, but certainly in terms of urgency.
