Sweetgrass
Lucien Castaing-Taylor, Ilisa Barbash / US, 2009 / 101 min.
Film making duo Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Ilisa Barbash immerse you in an overawing visual portrait of the cowboys who annually lead their sheep to the summer meadows of Montana, across mountain passes and along ravines. The animals come first.

A sheep farmer tosses newly born lambs into a mixing tub, like used rags. After the animals take their first steps the shepherds joke while they dock their tails: "Why are cowboy brains so smooth? Because they are seldom used". The tone has been set; Sweetgrass is no sentimental ode to the American west.
