The Arch
T'ang Shushuen / HK, 1968 / 95 min.
First screening in the Netherlands: a classic from 1968 by female filmmaker T’ang Shushuen from Hong Kong. T’ang creates an exceptional narrative about restrictive gender roles, based on a 17th-century folk tale and told in avant-garde, arthouse style – with dissolves, freeze-frames and visual repetition.

Young widow Mrs Tung lives with her vivacious daughter and vulnerable mother-in-law. She is completely dedicated to her work, and to the memory of her deceased husband; for which reason, the local bigwigs pay tribute to her in the form of a ‘chastity bow’.
The Arch screens as part of ‘M+ Restored’: an initiative supported by CHANEL.
