The Bad News Bears
Michael Ritchie / US, 1976 / 102 min.
Hilarious sports comedy about the Bears, a baseball team with nothing but poor players who get a new lease of life with the arrival of a beer drinking coach (Walter Matthau), a female pitcher (Tatum O'Neal) and a motorbike riding juvenile delinquent. than Coen’s favourite.
Walter Matthau turns in a stunning performance as Morris Buttermaker, a former lower-league baseball player who turns to drink later in life. Morris gets an opportunity to coach the Bears, a young baseball team in the Minor League, where his unconventional coaching methods prove their worth. Tatum O'Neal plays the team’s big hope, star pitcher Amanda Wurlitzer. The success of The Bad News Bears lead to many more (TV and film) follow-ups, and later even a remake by Richard Linklater.
