The Room Next Door
Pedro Almodóvar / ES, US, 2024 / 107 min.
Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore sparkle as two friends who have lost touch with one another, but are reunited. Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language production offers an incisive examination of friendship and mortality, and was awarded a Golden Lion in Venice. On December 7 Tilda Swinton will introduce the film.

Ingrid, a bestselling author and Martha, a former war correspondent, have not seen each other for a few years. When she hears Martha has cancer, Ingrid rushes to be by her sickbed. Old ties are rekindled, memories shared. Martha grieves the difficult relationship with her daughter, Ingrid talks about her deep-seated fear of death. Ultimately, Martha’s deeply personal request will link the women forever.
The Room Next Door, an adaptation of Sigrid Nunez's novel What Are You Going Through, is an empathetic character study of two women linked by deep friendship.
Once again, Almodóvar reveals himself to be the master of portraying complex relationships fed by unmentionable emotions. Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton play their characters with nuance and strength. Almodóvar films their meeting in a visually lush manner, underlined by Alberto Iglesias’ suggestive score.
Pre-film
Before The Room Next Door, you will see a short film made by Tilda Swinton and Sandro Kopp in 2018 featuring their five Springer Spaniels frolicking on the beach to music from Handel’s opera Flavio. They are completely absorbed in the moment, celebrating life together. Tilda Swinton hand-picked a short film, either from her rich oeuvre or from Eye’s collection, to precede all feature films.

Why in Eye
Pedro Almodóvar’s love letter to the self-determined. A blessed opportunity to grow something delicate and heartfelt with the wonderful Julianne Moore. A film that rings a deep bell for me.
