The Squid and the Whale is a record of four lives in crisis, the result is a tragicomic portrait of snobby New York intellectuals continuously haunted by unfulfilled ambitions. The film received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay (by Baumbach).
Director Noah Baumbach examines the effects of a divorce. New York, Brooklyn, 1986. The marriage of the Berkmans – both writers – is about to explode. Their sons, Walt and Frank, are trying to survive and take sides in the family drama. The mother becomes estranged from her family and starts an affair. The youngest son is having problems at school. Baumbach presents four lives in crisis, set against the backdrop of New York”s snobby, intellectual and highly frustrated coterie. The film received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay (by Baumbach).
