Two teenage girls want to escape the dreary industrial city in Lithuania where they live; they become close friends at a sinister school for models which promises them a better life. To obtain this though, they have to make increasingly extreme modifications to their bodies. Winner of a Golden Leopard in Locarno.
In the crumbling industrial suburbs of Kaunas in Lithuania, thirteen-year-old Marija (Vesta Matulytė) is mercilessly bullied because she walks with a limp. After being dumped with her grandma by her uninterested mother, Marija – together with rebellious Kristina (Ieva Rupeikaitė) – is picked up by one of the many obscure Lithuanian modelling schools that promise slender young girls from hopeless places a way out into a better life.
