True Grit
Joel Coen, Ethan Coen / US, 2010 / 110 min.
Joel and Ethan Coen’s imposing remake of the eponymous John Wayne western is a more human take on the revenge tale of a smart 14-year-old girl who gets the help of the toughest Marshall for miles (Jeff Bridges).

Joel and Ethan Coen didn’t make the epic western many genre filmmakers would have opted for, but a smaller, more moving and often witty revenge film. Hailee Steinfeld plays the righteous and self-confident 14-year-old Mattie Ross, whose father was shot recently. She hires the one-eyed drunk, Marshall ‘Rooster’ Cogburn, to track down the killer, but only if she gets to tag along. The tough Marshall, who seems like he hasn’t been civil in years is said to have true grit.
