Freedom fighter Rusli is seriously wounded fighting against the Dutch army. Tipi and her father, the head of an Indonesian village under Dutch occupation, take Rusli in and care for him. Neorealist film on the role of ordinary people in the struggle for liberation.

Turang, a film by left-leaning filmmaker Bachtiar Siagian, was believed lost – it is one of the Indonesian films made after Indonesia’s independence that deals with the war of independence against the Dutch army. Unlike many of the other films, which focus principally on military matters, this film highlights the crucial role played by ordinary people in the struggle for liberation. The neo-realist film is set in a native Karo community and paints a picture of the land, the traditions and the irrepressible desire for freedom.
