Waar de ratten koning zijn
Barbara den Uyl / NL, 1985 / 59 min.
The inhabitants of the Staatsliedenbuurt neighbourhood in Amsterdam fought for their alternative, social city. Neighbour Barbara den Uyl filmed their struggle with the system for well over a year with the death of squatter Hans Kok in a police cell as the ultimate low point.

In the mid-1980s the Staatsliedenbuurt neighbourhood in Amsterdam was a kind of free state ruled by squatters, punkers and the original inhabitants. The council’s authority had been reduced to next to nothing after Mayor Ed van Thijn had been roughly ejected from the area in 1984. The whole country was up in arms due to the footage broadcast on the national news.
