Wan pipel
Pim de la Parra / NL, SR, 1976 / 110 min.
Wan Pipel is screened on Surinam TV every year, around Independence Day (25 November). Eye will project the restored film on the big screen. Pim de la Parra’s classic explores the tensions between Surinamese idealists and their former colonisers.

Pim de la Parra’s narrative about student Roy Ferrol who returns to Paramaribo is viewed as 'the first Surinamese feature film'. Director De la Parra’s Wan Pipel touched on themes seen as controversial at the time. Will Roy (Borger Breeveld), an economics student, opt for his white, Dutch girlfriend Karina (Van Ammelrooy) or will he follow his heart and marry the Hindustani Rubia (Diana Gangaram Panday) to help develop Surinam? Roy is trapped between two worlds when he returns home to visit his dying mother.
