Young Frankenstein
Mel Brooks / US, 1974 / 102 min.
What could be more fun for a filmmaker than parodying film genres? Mel Brooks – who turns 100 this summer – became a master of this, as we can see in his classic spoofs such as Young Frankenstein – an affectionate comedy take on the tried-and-tested Frankenstein’s monster theme.

Young Frankenstein (with Gene Wilder, Marty Feldman, Peter Boyle and Madeline Kahn) was released in the same year Brooks’ hotly debated Blazing Saddles – a ‘Western burlesque’ mirthfully inverting all the clichés and standard roles of the genre – was raising eyebrows. Brooks’ parody of the monster film is again full of subversive, silly and politically incorrect humour, but also pays respectful homage to Rowland V. Lee’s 1939 classic Son of Frankenstein starring Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi.
