Youth (Spring)
Wang Bing / CN, FR, NL, 2023 / 215 min.
For six years, Wang Bing – one of the truly great contemporary filmmakers – filmed the gruelling working days van young textile workers, documenting the invisible world of China’s local economy. His compelling, lively camerawork also manages to uncover a spark of hope.

Zhili, 150 km from Shanghai. A city dedicated to textile production that attracts young workers from all over the surrounding rural areas, through which the Yangtze river winds. They are in their early twenties, sleep in shared dormitories and chat in the corridors. They work tirelessly for the prospect of one day starting a family, buying a house or setting up a workshop of their own.
