Dutch distribution company Cherry Pickers is releasing five of Demy’s films nationwide: Lola, La baie des Anges, Les parapluies de Cherbourg, Les demoiselles de Rochefort, and Peau d'âne. Eye is supplementing this selection with additional films by Demy, short films, and the new documentary Jacques Demy, le rose et le noir.

French director Jacques Demy (1931 – 1990) didn’t just make films, he created an entire cinematic universe concerned with fate and coincidence, doomed love and intersecting lives all creating something you think you recognise, yet which differs subtly from your familiar world.
Other Jacques Demy films will be screened to accompany the 4K restoration of the wonderful, bittersweet musical Les parapluies de Cherbourg, featuring major French film stars including Catherine Deneuve, Jeanne Moreau and Anouk Aimée.

He made ‘calm films about happiness’, or the failure to find it, whether through sung dialogue (cinéma enchanté), melodrama, or fantasy. The playful lightness found in many of his New Wave films is deceptive: Demy’s films are always imbued with meaning and symbolism.

Demy sought to create an all-encompassing cinema, a cinema of refined harmonies in which direction, music, colour, actors, dialogue, and set design all play an equal role.
