In addition to the retrospective, Eye distributes some of the highlights of her career to national film theatres: Les valseuses, La céremonie, La dentellière and La pianiste.

Intense and hypnotising, cool and on fire: this summer at Eye the spotlights are on actress Isabelle Huppert. In July and August Eye offers a tribute to the phenomenal French actress with a programme featuring more than thirty films, interviews, guests and Q&As.

This summer, Eye will open its cinemas for the films of Isabelle Huppert, one of the greatest French actresses of the past decades. Behind their smooth facade, her characters struggle with neuroses and obsessions, full of restrained emotions - a volcano about to erupt. Sophisticated, melancholic, misanthropic: with her enigmatic appeal, Huppert is not out to charm.

Undaunted

She often plays independent women with inner turmoil and detachment, roles surrounded by mystery. Huppert is a fearless actress, unafraid to step into the shoes of manipulative, cold and even violent women. From her small but impressive role in Les valseuses (1974) and her international breakthrough La dentellière (1977), she has appeared in more than 110 films. She has worked with many directors, from Godard to Tavernier and Chabrol, from Michael Haneke to Paul Verhoeven.

Her roles have already won Huppert several awards, including the French César, the European Film Prize, The Silver Bear of Berlin, the Best Actor Award in Cannes and the Golden Globe. She was nominated for an Oscar for her role in Paul Verhoeven's Elle (2016).

Next to over thirty films starring Huppert, the programme includes special shows and events, introductions, lectures, artist talks and Q&As. The main focus will be on Huppert’s collaboration with a wide range of filmmakers, her choice of films and roles and her acting style.

“I like to make unusual characters as normal as possible, because we all know that the tragic and abnormal always hide behind the normal.”
