Wong Kar Wai
In Eye and nationwide
Urban life, crime, love and music are fused into an intoxicating mix in Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai’s stylish films. Together with virtuoso cameraman Christopher Doyle, Wong Kar Wai immerses his audience in his lyrical and melancholy world with radical framing, slow motion, a deluge of music, heavy rainfalls and tragic love affairs.
Eye releases six films by Wong Kar Wai to Dutch theatres in partnership with Cinéart. Apart from The Hand, all films have been restored in 4K. We present In the Mood for Love, Chungking Express, Fallen Angels, Happy Together, 2046 and the director's cut of his short film The Hand.
“...sizzling cinema...films that you can almost touch and taste...unparalleled in romance...”
Chungking Express marked Wong Kar Wai's international breakthrough. Big city life, crime, love, and the music of The Mamas & the Papas: the film became an icon of the 1990s. Our programmers Martin and Thijs will tell you more about the soundtrack and talk to music supervisor Laura Bell.
4K digital restorations
Apart from The Hand, all films have been restored in 4K in partnership with the director, publisher Criterion Collection and the L’immagine ritrovato film laboratory in Bologna. The films are also screened nationwide.
