A Woman, A Gun and a Noodle Shop
Yimou Zhang / CN, 2009 / 95 min.
Zhang Yimou’s remake of Blood Simple, the Coen Brothers’ feature film debut. Comedic-grotesque noir about adultery transferred from 1980s Texas to 19th-century China, but with more obvious humour and an emphasis on special effects such as the noodles that fly across the kitchen.
A noodle restaurant situated in a godforsaken, dusty part of the Chinese province of Gansu. The owner, Wang, is visited by policeman Zhang. He tells Wang about the affair between the latter’s much younger spouse and the cook, Li. Wang orders Zhang to kill the couple and hide the bodies. From then on, everything that can go wrong, does.
