Broken Flowers

Jim Jarmusch / US, FR, 2005 / 105 min.

Tender, melancholy, drily comedic road movie about the listless Don Juan (Bill Murray) who visits five ex-lovers on a trip around America and through his soul, is equally hilarious as it is deep. Featuring Tilda Swinton, Sharon Stone and Jessica Lange.

The older, lethargic womaniser Don Johnston (Bill Murray) stoically watches his lover (Julie Delpy) leave him, frustrated by his unwillingness or inability to commit. At the same time, Don receives an anonymous letter stating he is the father of an 18-year-old son. To find out which of his exes sent it, he hesitantly sets out on a road trip around America to visit them all. One of them is embodied by Tilda Swinton, who plays the embittered girlfriend of a biker who lives down and out in a trailer camp.

Pre-film

Before Broken Flowers, you will see La peine du talion (Gaston Velle, 1906, 2’), a beautifully coloured early French film in which butterflies take revenge on a butterfly collector, with a new score by Thijs Havens (Eye). Tilda Swinton hand-picked a short film, either from her rich oeuvre or from Eye’s collection, to precede all feature films.

Why in Eye

Bill Murray searching for the mother of the son he never knew he had. When I first found the films of Jim Jarmusch, I found an America I could grasp, a world of outsider Americans, recognisable and full of a richness of lyrical awkwardness that felt both familiar and rare in terms of representation in the cinema. He and I met backstage at a Darkness concert in Los Angeles. Shortly afterwards, I received in the post a long handwritten letter, inviting me to play in this film. He has been a cherished comrade and close friend ever since.
